Resilience, dedication, and the vital role of agriculture took center stage as the district gathered at Biribiwomanmu to celebrate the 41st National Farmers’ Day. The vibrant event honored the hard work of local agricultural workers, culminating in awards presented to 15 outstanding farmers across various categories.

The highlight of the day was the coronation of 32-year-old Thomas Opoku, a native of Afoako, who was named this year’s Overall District Best Farmer.

Opoku’s journey in agriculture began shortly after graduating from Afoako D/A Junior High School. Over the past 15 years, the father of four has built a highly diverse and robust agricultural enterprise, serving as an inspiration to young people in the district considering careers in farming.

Today, Opoku manages an impressive variety of crops spanning over 49 acres, including:

• 15 acres of cocoa

• 10 acres of oil palm

• 10 acres of maize

• 6 acres of cassava

• 5 acres of plantain

• 3 acres of cocoyam

In addition to his extensive crop holdings, Opoku maintains a flourishing livestock operation, caring for 30 sheep, 35 pigs, and 70 local breed fowls.

As the top honor of the ceremony, Opoku received a grand prize package sponsored by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. His prizes included a brand-new motor tricycle, 10 cutlasses, 2 pairs of wellington boots, 5 bags of fertilizer, 2 knapsack sprayers, 5 bottles of weedicide, 4 bars of Key soap, and a certificate of recognition.

The Hon. DCE, Community leaders and agricultural officers commended all 15 award winners for their invaluable contribution to local food security and the district’s economy, urging the younger generation to emulate Opoku’s drive and vision.
