BUSINESS OF THE DAY
There was a brief discussion on the purpose of the meeting which is about how to stimulate development in our district and make it sustainable. Mr. Omane enlightened them on the situation at hand and the measures to put in place to mitigate effects. He continued by addressing the planning standards the people have been following in their various communities and it was noticed most of the chiefs in their own power have appointed some people from the communities to allocate lands for daily activities. Their way of allocating lands does not align with the proper planning standards which is negatively affecting development in the district.
Also, most land owners have been selling lands to strangers without the chief`s approval. Mr.Omane specified that committee members does not have the authority to sell lands to people.
He continued to say the chiefs have the power to put a stop to all the illegal activities that are hindering development in their communities. Nana hemaa and the Odikuro of Apaho said they have put in much effort to stop all the illegal acts but to no avail. One chief on behalf of the people pleaded with the assembly to intervene and go on public education to create awareness and also convince the communities to appreciate the need for effective planning.
A committee member from Apaho asked if the Assembly is in the position of selling lands
Mr. Anum Tetteh answered by saying the assembly does not sell lands but rather makes sure everyone buying a land meets the necessary requirements to obtain a land and also gives permit for various land uses.
Mr. Omane suggested the chiefs should first check the kind of development a person wants to use a land for before they sell it to them. He also suggested that the chiefs nominate people to form a committee to work on behalf of the assembly in every community to ensure proper planning which will improve development.
Mr. Omane recommended that, every community should have a local plan, as it designate areas for specific uses such as residential, commercial or industrial and also protects natural resources and environmental quality.
