THE NATIONAL SECURITY SENSITIZATION PROGRAM HELD AT ASSEMBLY CONFERENCE HALL ON 15TH SEPTEMBER, 2022

On Thursday, 15th September 2022 a team of six (6) officials from the National Security Outfit led by the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Captain Rtd Kofi Athur paid a working visit to the Amansie Central District Assembly with the aim of promoting the current National Security sensitization program aimed at countering violent extremism and terrorism in Ghana. The advocacy program was under the theme ‘SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING’.

The gathering drew participants from all the various religious, cooperate, traditional, Nananom, education, artisans and other social groups in the community. In his welcome address, the District Chief Executive of Amansie Central who also doubles as the Chairman of the District Security Council (DISEC), Hon. Michael Donkor expressed satisfaction with the relative conducive nature of the security situation in the District notwithstanding the many mining communities therein. He however bemoaned the deplorable nature of the roads in the district which poses a serious threat to vehicular and commercial activities. He also expressed grave concern about how the bad nature of the roads have affected the district police patrol vehicles rendering them incapacitated for regular security operations.

Furtherance to the security challenges in the district, Hon. Elvis Borey a government appointee also bemoaned the woefully inadequate number of police personnel in the district. He revealed there are only 2 police stations in the over 280 communities in the district and begged the government to build additional police stations and increase the visibility of police personnel in the district.

The Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, on his part educated the gathering on the establishment, composition and functions of the National Security Council. He also outlined the many security issues that threaten our national stability. He grouped these threats into two (2) main classes namely; internal and external threats. Prominent among the internal threats include electoral disputes, tribal and ethnic conflicts, media broadcasting of hate speeches, religious tensions,  chieftaincy disputes, child and human trafficking, money laundering and cyber crime, increased immoral activities such as gambling, prostitution, drug and substance abuse, influx of violent cult practices among the youth.

He also outlined some external security threats such as terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, increased used of guns and offensive weapons in Africa especially the sub region. He admonished the gathering to be vigilant and on the lookout for scrupulous personalities perpetuating suspicious activities in their communities and quickly report to the police administration so as to curtail any potential threat. He emphasized that the greatest weapon to fighting this menace is information gathering from the general public.
